Connect Tigard - Leadership Tigard Capstone Project
Connect Tigard, a local initiative coordinated by the 2024 Leadership Tigard class and the Tigard Chamber of Commerce, is gearing up for a fundraising and outreach. This will support local organizations including Family Promise of Tualatin Valley, Just Compassion, Good Neighbor Center, and the Tigard Library.
Connect Tigard, a capstone project for the 2024 Leadership Tigard class, was established with the goal of reducing inequalities in internet access, computers, and other digital tools. Bridging this gap promotes economic development, empowers people through digital literacy, and fosters social inclusion and civic engagement.
Thanks to a $5,000 contribution from OnPoint Community Credit Union and donated hardware from Free Geek, Connect Tigard will provide up to 50 desktop and laptop computers and 10 Internet hotspots to four area nonprofits. These nonprofits are making the equipment available for guests to use for free, helping put digital tools in the hands of those who would otherwise be left out.
"Having additional laptops for checkout at the library is a game-changer for our community. It levels the playing field, providing access to information, education, and opportunities for all. Whether it's for homework, job applications, research, or staying connected, these laptops empower our guests and help bridge the digital divide,” said Halsted Bernard, Tigard Library Director.
In addition to the donated equipment, Connect Tigard members will host a booth at Washington Square Mall outside of the food court on Friday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accept cash donations to purchase the remaining electronics and supplies that are not able to be donated for these nonprofits. Free Geek will also be on site and operating a technology collection site. Please visit https://www.freegeek.org/TechNOW for additional details.
